- How often should my pet be groomed?
This depends upon several factors:
All pets are different, but the main factor is breed type. Breeds with longer coats and coats that mat easily generally should be groomed at least every 4-6 weeks. But this does require diligent brushing and coat maintenance at home. If you do not spend much time at home grooming your pet, a good grooming regimen would be a professional bathing and brush out every 2 weeks, with a trim every 4-6 weeks. Shorthaired breeds generally require only bath and brush, approximately every 2 weeks.
Another factor is the type of trim (haircut) for your pet. Some folks like the look of a shorter trim, others do this simply because they are easier to maintain, with less brushing required at home. If you like to keep your pet in a short trim, more frequent trims are required to keep it short.
- Is grooming "Just for Show"?
No. All pets require regular bathing and brushing. Grooming is essential to keep you pet's coat and skin healthy. Left unattended, mats, fleas, and skin conditions can become aggravated and cause your pet not just discomfort but pain. Additionally, regular visits to the groomer can help in early detection of problems with health. While groomers are not veterinarians, we do handle your pet extensively during the bathing and grooming process; we may see something you might miss at home!
Some breeds have breed specific trims; these trims are often derived from the original working purpose the breed was developed for. Some have trims which highlight certain attributes or musculature of that particular breed. Some breeds are lightly trimmed or not at all to leave them looking natural.
What is most important is that your pet is comfortable and healthy, and that you are pleased with how it looks and able to maintain whatever brushing is required at home. You and your pet's lifestyle mostly determine this!
- My pet has short hair; he doesn't need grooming, right?
One of the most important things we can do for our pets is to groom them regularly, regardless of the breed or length of coat. Even short haired pets need regular brushing and bathing. Our bath package includes bathing, brushing, ear cleaning and nail trimming; all services that every pet needs on a regular basis.
- When should I begin grooming my puppy?
As early as possible; generally around 8-10 weeks. The key is to start early and provide good experiences! First grooms are especially important and involve a lot of positive reinforcement as puppies are introduced to new sights, noises, and equipment.
- How can I help my pet have a positive grooming experience?
Begin by having a regular grooming routine at home. Brush your pet regularly. Teach your pet to stand quietly as you brush him/her. Early on, begin handling your pet's feet and ears.
- Do your require proof of current vaccinations?
Yes.
- Do you groom cats?
We no longer groom cats. For their safety, two groomers are necessary.
- How often should Nails be trimmed?
Some dog's nails grow very quickly, others more slowly. Every three weeks is a good average. Nails that are too long can eventually affect your pet's posture and ability to stand and walk. If the nails are "curling under" or extend so far that your pet cannot stand comfortably, it is well past time for a trim.
- Do you groom all breeds?
Yes; we've groomed nearly ever breed imaginable, large and small! Give us a call and we'll be happy to discuss your particular pet.
